The Process of A Professional Finish

Creating sketches of my characters, was simple but this is how I created the finished product.

I started with the protagonist by thinking on what sort of character he was; the traits I’d like to give him and where he’d live while remembering it was an RPG.

2015-09-15 22.26.25

This was the sketch that I drew by taking that into consideration. Sort of a mature anime style because it was an RPG, a scar and a rough appearance due to the harsh place he lived. Simple. I didn’t want to over complicate him.

Screen Shot 2015-09-17 at 15.29.53

Next I uploaded the picture and Opened it in Sketchbook express and start work on him while considering colours and clothing choices.

Unfortunately I have lost a lot of the screenshots for this character.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 2.15.26 pm

I Opened my redrawn sketch of Mani into Sketchbook onto the Background Layer.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 2.25.27 pm

I start the line art for his face , making sure that the lines are sharp and clear with the Pen Tool with the Polyline engaged.

I make sure to concentrate on his fringe as I don’t want it encroaching on his eyes too much, as I want him to have a direct gaze. I end up pining one side back while editing it.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 2.59.27 pm

I continue all the way down to his feet, while making corrections here and there and strengthening some of the lines.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 5.39.43 pm

Once I have finished the line art, I delete the sketch to free up a Layer as it is no longer needed, I do this by easing it with the Harsh Rubber.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 3.41.58 pm

Once the line art is finished I start painting the main base colour base in the appropriate places, using the Paint Tool and the HSB Sliders in order to find the right skin tone.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 3.57.57 pm

Like a lot of people will recognise from celebrities makeup tips, I then find a lighter and darker colour from the base skin colour in order to add shadow and light to his face with contouring. For example, Mani has quite sharp cheekbones so I added the lightest and darkest colour side by side.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 4.16.20 pm

I’ll do this technique all over and then use the Blur Tool in order to smooth the harsh edges.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 4.28.54 pm

I then start experimenting with hair colour on a new Layer. I try black blurred into white to create an ombre effect, however when I compare his colour palette with Sol’s I find it too dark and rub it out.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 4.41.05 pm

I settle on  blue, finding it more fitting for both his class as the Priest of the Moon and with his relationship with his brother who is boldly red.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 5.00.11 pm

On another new Layer I continue with the blue and the Blur Tool, adding in red beads to further content him to Sol.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 5.10.25 pm

Lastly, on another Layer, I add a metal texture for the bands around his legs by going to File’s dropdown menu and then “Add Image,” which will allow me to drop in another photo.

Once I have the image I want I rub out the extra.

Mani Character Sheet

I then make sure the image is clear before I add the text with the Add Text Layer and save it to multiple locations.

“Anusha” – The Default Avatar

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 6.52.59 pm

With the Avatar it gets a bit more complicated as there is two at one time and they are meant to be a mirror image of each other, with the only variation being their gender and the changes that makes.

However I still start by Opening the image inside SketchBookExpress.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 9.13.27 pm

I use the Pen Tool to add line art, starting with the female before moving onto the male version.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 10.03.18 pm

I use the Harsh Rubber to erase the sketch on the other Layer.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 10.17.11 pm

Once the line art is finished I use the Paint Tool to colour in the skin first before using the Blur Tool.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 11.28.05 pm

I struggle with what colour to use for their hair before deciding on a blue-white combo using the Paint and Blur Tool to achieve.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 12.05.13 pm

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 11.29.44 am

I then add textures – making sure that there is no changes.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 1.53.01 pm

I experiment with some blue shading on the bottom of their tunic’s but ultimately decide against it.

Anusha Character Sheet1

Once I have cleaned the image and I have added the text, I Save the image to multiple sources.

Muskaan – The Antagonist

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 7.37.26 pm

I add in the rough sketch.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 7.07.23 pm

I then start the line art while struggling to draw in her hand. That is my second attempt. And adding other details to her dress and changing the rough shape of her hair.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 7.37.35 pm

I use the Harsh Rubber to erase the sketch on the other Layer.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 7.48.49 pm

I colour her with the Paint tool, making her a lighter tone from any of the other characters due to her not actively living under the sun like the others.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 8.08.41 pm

I go onto colour her dress, starting with a dark grey base and then adding black to the bottom of the skirt to blur later.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 8.14.56 pm

I then add a gold texture to enhance the otherwise dark colour and further separate her from the other characters who wear silver or no metal at all, as it is a value resource in “Wolcen.”

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 8.33.29 pm

I use multiple colours and the Blur Tool to create her hair colour.

Muskaan Character Sheet

Once I have used the Harsh Rubber to get rid of the excess, I add the text and save it to multiple sources.

Adalheidis – The Healer

Screen Shot 2015-11-28 at 8.37.45 pm

I Open her sketch.

Screen Shot 2015-11-28 at 8.13.43 pm

I then start with the line art, taking a particularly long time on her hair as it is by far, the most complicated with the multiple plait.

Screen Shot 2015-11-28 at 8.33.10 pm

I add detail in this time, like the beads wrapped around her staff and the crystal faces and wood at the bottom of the staff.

Screen Shot 2015-11-28 at 8.37.31 pm

I use the Harsh Rubber to erase the sketch.

Screen Shot 2015-11-28 at 8.46.35 pm

I colour with Paint Tool, contouring with the tree colours. Hers is one of the darkest skin tones as she, being a Healer, would be out in the sun for long hours to harvest herbs. I go on to use the Blur Tool.

Screen Shot 2015-11-28 at 9.36.53 pm

I then try to colour her hair with purple tones but I don’t like it and use the Harsh Rubber to get rid of it.

Screen Shot 2015-11-28 at 9.56.40 pm

I try green – an interesting shade with her gold eyes and give her a third colour to further separate the two braids.

Screen Shot 2015-11-28 at 10.02.32 pm

Screen Shot 2015-11-28 at 10.49.57 pm

Screen Shot 2015-11-28 at 11.01.55 pm

I then add multiple textures with the method I explained before.

Screen Shot 2015-11-28 at 11.09.05 pm

I then go onto colour in the rest of her.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 12.35.15 am

I use the Marker Tool to redden the wood texture so the colours blend in better with the rest of her.

Aaliz Character Sheet

Once I have cleaned her up, and add the text, I go onto save her to multiple sources.

Frigga – The Frighter

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 5.40.35 pm

Again I Open the primary sketch I drew of the character onto the Background Layer.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 5.53.00 pm

I then continue with the Pen Tool to do the line art.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 6.17.43 pm

Half way through with the line art though and I realise that her lower body is in a funny position and on another Layer I make corrections to her pose, hopefully making her look less awkward.

I drew it in pink to make it easily visible and so I won’t be confused when I continue with the line art.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 6.37.43 pm

I start the drawing the line art,  adding in shoes which I hadn’t add in my rough sketch.I gave her boats as she is a very physical unit and would e on her feet a lot.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 10.26.26 pm

I then use the Harsh Rubber to erase the sketch.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 8.26.55 pm

I then start colouring with the Paint Tool, remembering to contour.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 9.18.33 pm

Here I have roughly added the three colours for her “top” while looking for the right colour which would harmonise with her hair.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 9.29.43 pm
Liking how the colours meld together, I match her eyes to her top while making her left lighter then her right as she is blind on that side due to a past injury.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 9.50.26 pm

I then colour her three quarter lengths and go over it with the Blur Tool.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 10.13.16 pm

Once that is done I begin to add the textures.

Frigga Character Sheet

Once the image has been cleaned up, I Save the image to multiple sources.

Forseti – The Warrior

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 1.32.30 am

After Opening the image inside SketchBookExpress and immediately start with the Pen Tool on a new Layer while editing some details, like the creases, the hand shape and other smaller things like stitching.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 1.49.56 am

I use the Harsh Rubber to erase the sketch.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 1.57.55 am

I then go onto add skin colour.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 2.04.31 am

I, however, have to repeat that process when the lightest colour tone tunes out to be too yellow to fully blend into the other two.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 2.24.55 am

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 2.48.53 am

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 3.27.58 pm

I recolour the hair three times before finally settling on a brown-dark pink ombre.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 2.51.27 am

I start some of the larger texturing.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 3.22.06 pm

And then go onto colour his clothing. I use mainly browns and greens as those are common colours in “Wolcen” and blend in moderately well with his other colourings.

Forseti Character Sheet

Once I’ve cleaned the image up, and added the text I save the image to multiple sources.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 3.52.54 pm

I Open the Image in SketchbookExpress and right away I notice a problem with his right leg and edited it in the same colour.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 4.07.26 pm

I begin the ink art with the Pen Tool.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 4.38.45 pm

I then use the the Harsh Rubber to erase the sketch.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 4.49.18 pm

I use the Pen Tool to colour in his skin.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 5.22.36 pm

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 6.12.08 pm

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 5.24.37 pm

I immediately start texturing as he has less clothes than the other characters.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 6.17.09 pm

I colour in his hair and eyes, making an effect to try and making them look animal-like, like a wolf, to match his Class of Beast Master.

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 6.27.46 pm

Screen Shot 2015-11-29 at 6.22.50 pm

I then go on to colour the remainder of his clothing.

Sindri Character Sheet

Once I have cleaned up the image I Save it multiple sources.
